The G.K. Chesterton Mug - On Mindfulness
The Drinklings' G.K. Chesterton Mug -
“I am not absentminded. It is the presence of mind that makes me unaware of everything else.”
Yes, we do have a G.K. Chesterton Beer Stein, but we wanted to go back and revisit it, especially as I (Randy) have been pouring through his incredible biography on Saint Francis of Assisi. You better believe I'll be drinking my cup of coffee out of this one for the next few days!
A quick reflection on the quote: G.K. Chesterton is certainly amongst a few of the most thoughtful critics of 20th century and 21st-century fads and most certainly would have a few things to say about the recent trends of "mindfulness" meditation, though I have a suspicion that he would recognize that such trends often speak to an underlying universal desire. It doesn't take much for one to realize that new releases like You are a Badass, The Art of Not Giving a F***, 10% Happier, and so forth, even onto Brene Brown's Daring Greatly (which I personally love), are reflective of our contemporary culture's inner turmoil.
We're distracted in this day of age like never before and, likewise, we are amongst the most unhappy. We have more money, more possessions, and more knowledge than any other time in history and, yet, we find ourselves continually looking for something deeper.
Enter Chesterton. If it's depth that you're looking for, he'll surely be amongst a very select group of writers throughout history that will point you in the right direction--and he'll give you a great deal to chew on for the journey.
