The Dietrich Bonhoeffer Mug

This beautiful artwork by Megan Kenyon of Servants Cry Studios is a testament to the legacy Bonhoeffer possesses for advocates of justice, liberation theology, and resistance to totalitarianism. Dietrich Bonhoeffer (4 February 1906 – 9 April 1945) was a German pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi dissident, and leader of the Confessing Church.

Bonhoeffer is perhaps best known for two seminal books: The Cost of Discipleship and Letters and Papers from Prison, which spurred decades of intense theological debate concerning how Christianity and a post-WW II world might be able to co-exist and flourish without the need to pit one against the other. Bonhoeffer's concept of "religionless Christianity" was not an invitation to a death of God movement but a reflection that a society cannot properly regress the realities of the 20th century. God must stand beyond the social program, the rituals. God must be beyond religion.

Bonhoeffer still stands, some nearly 75 years since his execution by the Nazis, as a pivotal figure in Church history and as an important figure in the German resistance to Hitler. This mug is a reminder that no matter who we are, we have a responsibility to practice resistance as a matter of faith -- both faith in God and faith in the world's possibilities.
