The Emily Dickinson Mug

Fewer names in the world of American poetry serve as so foundational a pillar as Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886). Known also for her extreme isolation, Dickinson was a prolific poet whose poetry was unique in many ways! Many of her poems dealt with eternality and death and the majority of her 1,800 poems were left unknown until after her death (she only published 12 during her life).

Perhaps her best-known poem to date is Hope is the Thing with Feathers which is also considered by many to be one of the greatest poems in the English language.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
